Simone Biles Breaks Gymnastics Record After Winning 21st Medal At Worlds

49th FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships - Day Five

Simone Biles just smashed yet another gymnastics record this week.

On Tuesday (October 8), the United States womenโ€™s team took home their 21st medal at the Worlds Gymnastics Championships in Stuttgart, Germany, a moment which also marked a significant milestone for Biles career. With her 21st trophy, the 22 year old broke her tie with Russian gymnast Svetlana Khorkina for the most medals won overall by a woman at the world championships.

The accomplishment is the latest in a string of historical performances for Biles this month. The beam dismount she delivered back in August has officially been coined as โ€œThe Bilesโ€ earlier this month, and the triple-double stunt she pulled off during her floor routine at the time will be named โ€œThe Biles IIโ€ after she landed the move during the qualifying round at Worlds.

โ€œEvery year it feels better and better just because weโ€™re adding to the legacy,โ€ Biles said of her record-breaking feat. โ€œI feel like I never think of records. I just go out there and do what I came to do, which is compete for the country.โ€ Now, the star is just two trophies away from matching Vitaly Scherboโ€™s record 23 trophies, the most won for both men and women.

Bilesโ€™ achievements come a month after she broke her silence on her brother Tevin Biles-Thomasโ€™ triple-homicide arrest. "My heart aches for everyone involved, especially for the victims and their families," Simone wrote via Twitter days after Tevinโ€™s arrest. "There is nothing that I can say that will heal anyoneโ€™s pain, but I do want to express my sincere condolences to everyone affected by this terrible tragedy."
