As Gossip Cop reported, at least 58 people were killed and more than 500 injured after 64-year-old gunman Stephen Paddock opened fire on the Route 91 Harvest Festival earlier this month. Campos, a security officer who was working at the Mandalay Bay Hotel on the night of the attack, was the first person to encounter the shooter on the 32nd floor. As he approached the hotel room unarmed, Paddock fired through the door, wounding him in the leg. Speaking to DeGeneres for the first time, having canceled a number of other major interviews, Campos tells the talk show host, “I’m doing better each day. Slowly but surely, healing physically and mentally.”

The security guard, who is joined on the show by building engineer Stephen Schuck, recounts the events that took place at the Mandalay Bay Hotel on the night of the shooting. “When I was walking down [the corridor], I heard rapid fire. At first, I took cover, I felt a burning sensation. I went to go lift my pant leg up and I saw the blood. That’s when I called it in on my radio that shots had been fired,” Campos shares. He adds, “There was a female that came out and I told her to go back inside, I told her it wasn’t safe. Shortly after, that’s when Stephen was approaching, I told him to stay back and get cover, and that’s when more rounds were fired.”

An emotional and brave Campos, who has been hailed a hero after the Las Vegas shooting, goes on to thank all the people who came together and helped on the night of the massacre. He says, “I want to mention all the people that assisted that night, whether it was Metro, the FBI, the community especially coming together to help everyone in need. The first responders, even the people that got called in to assist in the hospitals. Everyone came together to help that night in the darkest hour.” Watch the full interview below.
