Tigers Take Opener From Rays In Ninth

The Detroit Tigers (13-23) defeated the Tampa Bay Rays (21-15) 3-2 on Monday night at Tropicana Field.

Jonathan Schoop homered in the fourth inning to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead, which would be all they would get off Rays starter Corey Kluber. Brett Phillips homered in the sixth, then Wander Franco came up with a sacrifice fly in the eighth, to tie the game 2-2.

Tigers first baseman Harold Castro would be the hero, hitting a solo homer in the top of the ninth inning to lead Detroit to a 3-2 win.

Corey Kluber was good in his start for the Rays, allowing two earned runs on four hits while striking out eight and walking none in six innings of work. Andrew Kittredge (3-1, 3.00) took the loss after allowing Castro's home run in the ninth inning.

The Rays and Tigers now meet in the second game of the three game series on Tuesday evening. First pitch from Tropicana Field is scheduled for 6:40 PM - pregame coverage begins with the Inside Pitch hosted by Jay Recher at 5:30 PM on 95.3 WDAE & AM 620.
