Billie Eilish Cries At BRIT Awards, Tearfully Admits She Felt 'Very Hated'

The BRIT Awards 2020 - Show

Billie Eilish nearly came to tears at the 2020 BRIT Awards.

While accepting the trophy for Best International Female Solo Artist at last night’s (February 18) awards ceremony, Eilish made a heartbreaking confession about dealing with her detractors. “I’ve felt very hated recently. And, when I was on the stage and I saw you guys all smiling at me,” Eilish said through tears of joy, “It genuinely made me wanna cry. And I wanna cry right now, so thank you.”

The emotional moment came just hours after the “Bad Guy” singer-songwriter made another hard revelation about facing Internet trolls on Instagram. “I stopped reading comments fully. It was ruining my life,” Eilish told BBC Breakfast before the show, where she also delivered the live debut of her song “No Time to Die” from the upcoming James Bond film of the same name.

“The cooler the things you get to do are, the more people hate you. It’s crazy,” the 18-year-old added. “The internet is just a bunch of trolls, you know? And the problem is that a lot of it is really funny. I think that’s the issue — that’s why nobody really stops, because it’s funny.”

Success has become a bittersweet thing for the four-time Grammy-winning songbird, whose struggles with depression and anxiety, she bravely revealed, led to suicidal thoughts. “I was so unhappy last year,” she shared in a pre-Grammys interview. “I was so unhappy, and I was so, like, joyless. I don’t want to be too dark but I genuinely didn’t think I would make it to 17.”
